<p>Well, no it wasn't very important to the series, even though it's implications would've /should've shocked the Ninja world to its core. </p>

<p>It could be..I don't think this side story should be seen as insignificant, I felt this story actually revived the Uchiha Clan, albeit in a less than dignified manner but a revival in some way to me. </p><p>That has to have significant repercussions for any other stories Kishi tells in Naruto's universe in my opinion. </p><p>Ultimately tho, this story is significant for Sarada, Sasuke and Sakura for obvious reasons, their family was made whole after so many years of Sasuke's normadic lifestyle. </p>

<p>It was necessary.Gaiden was like a prologue to Boruto movie,it gave us information about Sarada and Chocho,their abilities and their personalities. It showed how Sarada awakened her sharingan,what happened to team Taka, Orochimaru and Kabuto. Since Boruto movie is supposed to focus on him and his advances as a Ninja there is little time to no time for other characters. Also,'Who's my real mother?' drama was for plot progression. </p>

<p>Naruto Gaiden served more as a prequel to <i>Boruto</i>. Without Gaiden, there's a lot of unanswered questions (mainly about everyone's kids). </p>

<p>Gaiden produced even more questions than it answered. Like what's Eyeball Man's relation to Itachi, and why does he seem to adore him so much? What's his relationship with Akatsuki? What is Eyeball Man's ultimate fate? Did he die after his Onion clones turned on him and stabbed him? Or did he use Izanagi? Looking at Shin Sr.'s museum of sharingans, Sasuke should have figured out that it could be used for Izanagi like Danzo did. So why didn't Sasuke pursue the Shin affair further? </p><p>Also, whose body is Orochimaru using? He looks like a woman now. So is that a new host body from another shinobi, or is it a clone body prepared by Orochimaru in his lab? If it is the body of another shinobi, why isn't Konoha taking action against Oro for unethical behaviour and experiments? If it is a clone body, then why does it look like that of a woman's? Also, how come Oro and Kabuto haven't been prosecuted for crimes against humanity? </p><p>There probably are a few other questions but these are all that come to my mind right now. </p>

<p>Shin studied the Uchiha clan while he was with Orochimaru. From there, he learned about Itachi and developed a fixation on him. He chose to revive Akatsuki, because he believed that peace caused stagnation to human evolution. And, based off of what our translators have to say, the word choice of the characters in Chapter 700+10 imply that Shin died of his injuries. </p><p>As for the whole Orochimaru body thing, it doesn't really affect the plot much, so it wasn't addressed. Kabuto and Orochimaru were probably pardoned for saving Sasuke from death and reanimating the Hokages, both of which helped the Allied Forces win the war. If Sasuke can ally with Akatsuki, infiltrate Kumo, be declared an international criminal, kill a Hokage Candidate and <i>still</i> be excused, Orochimaru and Kabuto's crimes look way less severe in comparison. </p>
