Kishimoto's next series to be a "monthly" sci-fi manga

Via an interview posted on Anime Matome, Kishimoto revealed some of his plans for his next series.

He's already started working on the draft for his next series and has the main characters designed, though he hasn't showed his editor yet. He had been thinking about what he wanted to do next while working on Naruto, and had already decided the genre would be science fiction.

He isn't interested in doing another weekly series, but when asked if he was going to target a monthly magazine, he instead said he was interested in making the series for the digital Shonen Jump Plus platform, as it has less strict page count and deadline restrictions.

He's not prepared to announce it yet, but is challenging himself to surpass Naruto with it, and hopes it will be an even bigger hit.

I would say he may have a shot if he just doesn't make it stupid by the end like he did with Naruto.

Thumbs up for a much better storyline and character approach. Naruto was good, but I pray this to be better. Suzaku, any idea when this will be out (like as in this year, or next)?

Surpass Naruto?! Look at Toriyama, how were his latest series in popularity after Dragon Ball? Not big success...

If he becomes like Togashi, that would be something else.. But I doubt -_-

Kishi's new series will be monthly, so I predict that the sales and popularity will be affected by Naruto's success but let's see how Kishi will handle this and as TU3-sama said, the ending should be heart-breaking..

Kishi's artwork is epic and with that sci-fi storyline, he'll show us more of his epicness drawing, but let the storyline be as amazing as art...

No, but Dragon Ball far surpassed his first hit series, Dr. Slump. Toriyama also didn't want to do another long-running series after DB and instead worked mainly as a character designer for video games, occasionally publishing short, single volume series and one-shots.

Lightning rarely strikes twice, of course. We'll have to wait and see if he has another hit or not.

Surpass Naruto...? Now that's some challenge.Also, don't you people think that he kind'a sounds like Bolt. Now then I wonder, will succeed or not..?

Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball are weekly series and yeah just like Togashi's YuYu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter ... Same circumstances while the second series surpassed the first.. But for Kishi's case, it's different... Weekly popular series vs. newly monthly series.. it's difficult to compare

Definitely we have to wait if his newly series will follow those two mangakas path or not or at least Attack on Titan's sucess

surpassing naruto series? that's very challenging knowing naruto series massive juggernaut popularity and highly critical acclaim with people. but let's wait and see if kishi new series truly surpassing naruto

i hope he will do something interesting, another classic-shounen is boring, maybe he could go into the darker route with the MC killing people :D
