Indra was one of the two brothers to have awakened the Sharingan and the Mangekyo, while Asura did not. Asura did have access to the Wood Release ninjutsu, while Indra did not.

While it's all possible in the human mind that if you put your mind into something, you'll be really good at it, it wasn't exactly the case for Indra. Since the beginning, Hagoromo had been pondering on who to choose to succeed him in Ninshu, and he could not choose between Asura and Indra because they weren't ready... yet, although he had more faith that Asura would be the one since he had a great understanding of the human heart.

Although he is kind and suitable, Asura had no will to ever succeed his father in Ninshu and immediately assumed the role will go to his prodigious brother instead. That quickly proved untrue when both brothers returned from their journeys. In a way, you could say that both brothers were very much proportionally the same in ability. While Indra was indeed more powerful physically, he had no understanding of the human heart and almost drove the village he helped to near destruction. Asura on the other hand may be the weakest in power, but his mentality and understanding of the human heart became his greatest weapons in bringing prosperity in the village he had helped, thus gaining the trust of the villagers (and his father) to defeat his older brother.

If this is a little too hard for you to understand, picture it as Madara and Hashirama, or rather Naruto and Sasuke. Being the reincarnations of the two brothers who had fought, the two would eventually (by fate) somehow and somewhere fight to the death again.

Take Madara and Hashirama for example. Like the two brothers the two had gotten along well during their childhood and halfway through their adulthood. Until something came in between and forced them apart, which eventually led to a decisive battle. Both were almost equally matched in power, and Hashirama (being Asura's reincarnation) began to reason with Madara (Indra's reincarnation) to end the fight.

Naruto and Sasuke. Well they weren't exactly friends, but Sasuke did call Naruto his "one and only friend", while Naruto did the same. Naruto (Asura) began to reason with Sasuke (Indra).

You are under the impression that i don't understand this series. on the contrary i understand the series. i am simply stating a theory that everyone is wrong. its not that ashura isn't a genius he simply had no drive what so ever to learn. he didn't train as hard as Indra. yet after going on his journey he came back with a remarkable level of power

Asura got buffed by Hagoromo

my point still stands. Indra trained for his entire life, yet ashura showed no drive yet still prevailed. he suceeded in helping the village without years of intense training. all through out that he advanced his chakra control greatly to the point that after coming back from his journey he could use a wind barrier, he had a technique that resembled multiple rasengan floating around eachother yet he clearly didn't train years and years to develop that. and its clear that he didn't actually develop his chakra until he had a clear goal to achieve, and that was to save the village from the roots of the divine tree. with that goal he was able to quickly learn and develop techniques that could counter indra's those techniques were not granted to him by the power he was given by hagoromo. and he didn't get buffed up until hagoromo did the preyer circle

i would also like to add that ashura inherited the body of the sage so there is no way that indra was physically stronger than ashura
