I don't think this has ever been discussed. Both are going all out. Itachi is in his prime but Gaara is not.

Knowledge: not much for gaara, manga for itachi

Location: A Desert

Besides, I wonder if Itachi's genjutsu would work on Gaara if he uses it on Gaara's Third Eye. Technically, the Third Eye is directly linked to Gaara's optic nerve, so there's a chance that he can be affected by genjutsu cast on this eye.

the only reason Gaara was able to pull Madara out of his Susanoo was help from the Tsuchikage. Also I don't think Gaara in his prime include s Shukaku. Also, Izanami? Also, I edited the description a little bit so it is not seriously stacked in Gaara's favor. Gaara is NOT in his prime but Itachi is.

Amaterasu is a nonfactor here

Gaara’s sand was able to react to Fused Momoshiki which means nothing Itachi tries Taijutsu wise is working. In fact Itachi getting close at all is a bad idea.

Clone feints won’t work due to Gaara’s automatic defense

Susanoo is a double edged sword that drains Itachi significantly and Gaara can counter it via flight and stonewalling Yasaka Beads. Not to mention Itachi being Stationary in this environment means he can be sunk into the sand at any time.

Ephemeral isn’t working on any Kage class opponent

Gaara is a long ranged fighter so Tsykuyomi is a uphill battle

Itachi doesn't need Tsukuyomi to beat Gaara, his normal Genjutsu's are already sufficient. He just needs to look at the third eye one time, or gaara himselves eyes one time.

Itachi wins. No doubt.

I can't remember a single time Itachi struggled with a fight other than in his reanimation phase, and testing Sasuke's power. The closest thing to him struggling was when Jiraiya got him trapped in the toad and Itachi was like "lol, nah you ain't s**t" and dipped outta there.

Don't forget that the show revolves around the power (and only that) of the Uchiha. If there was no Uchiha, there would be no Naruto. Literally anyone who is part of the Uchiha is hard to battle with. Do I need to go over of how powerful Madara himself was? Obito?(but to be fair, its hard to tell if he alone was pretty good because he did have Zetsu on his side) The next Uchiha on the list is Itachi.

Gaara on the other hand has struggled many times. From Genin to Jonin, there have been a many characters that got close to Gaara before 1.) they were stopped by someone else or 2.) they decided not to FINISH HIM. He also had the one-tail and the sand, but that's part of his power so I'm not gonna use it against him.

Btw, Itachi joined the ANBU when he was 11. Became ANBU Captain at 13.

So are you saying he can't eject a susanoo user using his sand?
And it's kinda still stacked in Gaara's favour with the desert and full knowledge on Itachi for Gaara. The only way gaara can lose is if he's careless to look at Itachi's eyes to fall prey for Tsukuyomi or any genjutsu for that matter...just like how the raikage was careless.. Itachi loses 8/10

lyon made a great point, that Gaara's defense reacted to fused Momoshiki.
and to just be clearl its absolute delusional to believe that itachi is anywhere near as powerful as fused momoshiki

itachi doesn't have anything that could penetrate prime Gaara's sand
in the end the fight as this post puts it would come down solely to stamina.
