Ya no because people in the clan we’re starting to question his leadership because Itachi was fucking up on the spy job an blamed it on Fugaku you know the scene where Itachi gets in an argument with his fellow Uchiha those are the main heads for the Coup so using Koto on Fugaku was pointless

You can't say he was messing it Itachi was doing that on purpose to buy as much time for the Hokage to make a decision that satisfied both parties

Honestly, it didn't even seem like Hiruzen managed to speak to Fugaku or other representatives of the Uchiha clan. Seems more could have been done with subsequent talks, which never occurred.

From their point of view he was messing up even if it was on purpose don’t forget most of the clan dosen’t know he’s a double agent

Hiruzen seemed to take quite long to make a decision as to what to do. What were the options: Talk to fugaku and other leaders of the clan to try and find countermeasures for the coup, or massacre the entire clan? Either way I think his lack of efficiency shows that at that point he was way past his prime as a hokage.

@Chorblez My issue is that, Hiruzen sorta went straight to Shisui's plan, without even trying to talk to the Uchiha representatives. It even mirrors what Danzo did at the 5 Kage summit. I think talks would have calmed things down.

I don’t believe so many Uchiha were on board with the Coup already plus it was meant to be a secret so if they figured out that the Hokage knew about the Coup they would blame Itachi and be even more pissed at the village making a fellow Uchiha betray his clan.
