Wouldn't say he was struggling, Kabuto was dominating them 3v1 and he'd never used the rinnegan before. Nagato would likely no / low diff any of them in a 1v1. Remember that Itachi was the only one with the battle IQ to counter Chibaku Tensei and none of them had the AP to counter it alone.

Minato Vs Nagato would be an epic fight as they're fairly well matched (Minato's battle IQ, fuinjutsu, and FTG will cause a lot of trouble for Nagato) but Nagato wins on hax. Chakra rods can disable Minato, rinnegan has some pretty broken abilities such as soul extraction (which should absolutely counter Edo)

Juubito not being able to phase is explained by manga events and the databooks entry for Kamui. We know it can be used with the Ten Tails since Madara did it. If the portal ability works the phasing ability will since it uses less chakra (chakra use is dependent on size of the object being transferred, phasing a portion of the body would cost less than an entire body). There's a single difference between the portal ability, offensive ability (Kakashi), and the defensive ability (phasing; Obito) that would make a difference and that's the fact that the defensive ability is an unconscious ability (automatic / passive) and the others are all conscious (active) abilities. The reason why this is important is that we saw how much trouble Obito had suppressing the Ten Tails, his unconscious mind was still suppressing it's will unlike Madara who didn't break a sweat.

@BiggestG tbh I don't think that's how he controlled Nagato, or most of the edo tensei. He simply gave them commands what to do, not controlling their every movement.

It's a bit of a streach that he would know how each of their unique jutsus work. He definitely knew a lot about the various Kekkei Genkai and secret jutsu due to Orochimaru's obsessive research on them, but he simply wouldn't be able to use them with same level of expertise.

However he did take over 3rd Raikage completely, at which point he lost the ability to speak at all. Therefore I believe Nagato wasn't directly controlled by Kabuto, but mearly commanded

@McGallant you're right about the limited control, nothing like with Mu.

I still believe it limited Nagato's capability, unlike with Mu where he took direct control, and others he suppressed and gave directives to; I believe he would have been quite involved in Nagato's actions constantly feeding him instructions ("go here, try this, focus on X" etc). Rinnegan is the stuff of legends but thanks to Pain he should have had a decent amount of intel. Still, assuming he was giving constant and direct commands that would limit Nagato's capability as none of it is second nature like it would have been with Nagato.

@BiggestG The concentration thing does make sense as Madara tamed the Ten Tails easily while Obito struggled. However Obito implied not being able to use Kamui was a weakness of the Ten Tails specifically.

@SuperVegeta69 he says HE can't pass with the 10t inside of him, not that it isn't possible at all (he wouldn't know).

The fact is that all 3 Kamui abilities use the same root ST Jutsu and the phasing ability being an unconscious ability is the only relevant difference between them (portal ability uses more chakra). We saw how much trouble Obito was having suppressing the Ten Tails will (he was almost consumed by it).

There's noway for Obito to know it's not possible which is proven by the fact that he's surprised it's not possible.
