The Itachi Pursuit Arc (also known as the Sasuke vs. Itachi Arc) is a major story arc in Naruto: Shippuden that serves as a turning point for Sasuke Uchiha's character and reveals critical information about the Uchiha clan massacre. The arc is a two-pronged mission: one from Sasuke's perspective and the other from the Leaf Village's.
Characters
The arc features three main groups of characters:
Team Hebi (now Team Taka):
Sasuke Uchiha: The central character of the arc, seeking revenge against his brother, Itachi. He has absorbed Orochimaru and gained new powers.
Suigetsu Hozuki: A former prisoner of Orochimaru and a master swordsman who can transform his body into water. He desires to collect all the swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist.
Karin: A former subordinate of Orochimaru and a skilled sensory ninja who is obsessed with Sasuke. Her bite can heal others by consuming their chakra.
Jugo: A troubled ninja with a curse mark that allows him to absorb natural energy, but also causes him to lose control. He joins Sasuke in search of a master who can curb his violent impulses.
The Leaf Village's Pursuit Squad:
Kakashi Hatake: The team leader, skilled in ninjutsu and the Sharingan.
Naruto Uzumaki: Still determined to bring Sasuke back to the village. He's now a stronger shinobi but struggles to find Sasuke.
Sakura Haruno: Continues to pursue Sasuke and uses her medical ninjutsu and enhanced strength.
Yamato: A Wood Style user and the temporary leader of Team 7.
Sai: A member of Team 7 who uses ink-based jutsu to fight and spy.
Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame: Members of Team Kurenai, they use their unique abilities to track Sasuke and Itachi.
Akatsuki:
Itachi Uchiha: Sasuke's older brother, who is hunted by both Sasuke and the Leaf Village. He is seriously ill throughout the arc.
Deidara: A member of the Akatsuki who uses explosive clay.
Tobi: Deidara's new partner, who initially acts as a goofy, clumsy character.
Key Events and Fights
The arc is defined by Sasuke's journey to find and kill Itachi, while the Leaf Village's pursuit squad tries to catch up.
Formation of Team Hebi
The arc starts with Sasuke absorbing Orochimaru's power after deciding he has learned all he can from him. He then recruits his new team, Hebi, to hunt for Itachi. This team is comprised of the three former prisoners he releases: Suigetsu, Karin, and Jugo.
Sasuke vs. Deidara
In search of Itachi, Team Hebi encounters Deidara and Tobi of the Akatsuki. Deidara, enraged that Sasuke "stole" the chance to fight Orochimaru, challenges him to a fight.
Deidara uses his clay bombs, C1 and C2, to launch wide-scale attacks and create diversions, flying on a clay bird to maintain an aerial advantage.
Sasuke uses his Sharingan to anticipate Deidara's moves and counter his attacks. He uses his lightning-based jutsu, such as Chidori and the Chidori Current, which are effective against Deidara's earth-based clay.
The fight culminates with Deidara resorting to his ultimate, last-resort technique, C4 Karura, which releases microscopic bombs that enter the opponent's bloodstream. He then performs his final, self-destructing technique, C0, which creates a massive explosion.
Sasuke survives by summoning Manda, Orochimaru's giant snake, and using his Sharingan to place it under a genjutsu, forcing it to endure the blast. He then teleports himself to safety using a space-time jutsu.
This battle showcased how much Sasuke had grown and established his prowess after training with Orochimaru.
The Final Confrontation: Sasuke vs. Itachi
After the fight with Deidara, Sasuke finally finds Itachi. The epic battle takes place in the former Uchiha hideout.
The fight begins with a battle of genjutsu, where Itachi traps Sasuke in the Tsukuyomi, a powerful genjutsu that creates an illusionary world where time and space are manipulated. Sasuke manages to break free, surprising Itachi.
The fight shifts to ninjutsu, with both brothers using their signature fire style techniques.
They then use their powerful Mangekyo Sharingan techniques. Itachi uses the inextinguishable black flames of Amaterasu, which Sasuke counters with a similar technique.
As the fight progresses and Itachi's health deteriorates, he activates the Susanoo, a giant, ethereal warrior made of chakra that provides a powerful defense and attack. Itachi’s Susanoo is equipped with the Yata Mirror, an ultimate defensive shield, and the Sword of Totsuka, a blade that can seal anyone it pierces.
Desperate, Sasuke unleashes his ultimate lightning technique, Kirin, which uses natural lightning to strike his opponent. Itachi blocks the attack with his Susanoo.
In the final moments of the fight, with his Susanoo weakened, Itachi approaches Sasuke. He pokes Sasuke on the forehead, the same loving gesture he used to do when they were children. He then collapses, and his last words are, "Sorry, Sasuke. This is the last time." He dies with a smile on his face.
The Aftermath and Tobi's Revelation
After Itachi's death, Tobi appears and takes Sasuke to a secluded location to treat his injuries. It is here that Tobi reveals his true identity to Sasuke as Madara Uchiha, and tells him the truth about Itachi.
Itachi's True Story: Tobi reveals that Itachi didn't kill the Uchiha clan out of hatred. He was a double agent for the Leaf Village, ordered by the village elders to exterminate his clan to prevent an impending coup d'état. Itachi chose to sacrifice his family and his reputation to save the village and his brother.
Itachi's Illness: Itachi was already suffering from a terminal illness and was nearing the end of his life. He prolonged his life with medicine so he could die by Sasuke's hand, ensuring Sasuke would become a hero to the Leaf Village.
The Mangekyo Sharingan: Itachi reveals that his death was a final gift to Sasuke, enabling him to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan.
Upon learning the truth, Sasuke is devastated and enraged by the Leaf Village's deception. He renames his team Taka, with a new mission: to destroy Konoha. The arc concludes with Sasuke, consumed by his new goal, joining forces with the Akatsuki.
