The first arc in question is the Sasuke Recovery Mission Arc.
The time span of this arc is episodes 107-135.
The arc begins with a distraught Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno learning of Sasuke's departure. Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, immediately assembles a team to retrieve Sasuke. Due to the limited availability of high-level ninja, a team of genin is formed, led by Shikamaru Nara, who is promoted to Chunin specifically for this mission. The team consists of:
Shikamaru Nara: The team leader, known for his genius-level intellect and strategic mind.
Naruto Uzumaki: Driven by his promise to Sakura to bring Sasuke back, and his own strong bond with his teammate.
Choji Akimichi: A loyal friend to Shikamaru, who despite his initial reluctance, fights fiercely for his comrades.
Neji Hyuga: A talented Hyuga clan member with the Byakugan, known for his precision and skill.
Kiba Inuzuka: A skilled tracker with his ninja dog, Akamaru.
Rock Lee: Despite being injured in his fight with Gaara, he joins the mission to prove his worth.
The team's journey is fraught with challenges. They are pursued by the Sound Four, Orochimaru's elite bodyguards, who are tasked with ensuring Sasuke's safe passage. The Sound Four, consisting of Jirobo, Kidomaru, Sakon and Ukon, and Tayuya, all possess unique and formidable abilities.
The arc is defined by a series of intense one-on-one battles as the Leaf Village genin face off against the Sound Four. Each fight is a testament to the growth and character development of the young ninja:
Jirobo vs. Choji Akimichi: Choji, initially hesitant, is motivated by his friends and unleashes his full power to defeat Jirobo.
Kidomaru vs. Neji Hyuga: Neji utilizes his Byakugan and Gentle Fist to a new level, fighting a desperate battle against Kidomaru's cunning spider-like attacks.
Sakon and Ukon vs. Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru: Kiba and his dog Akamaru use their teamwork and fierce loyalty to combat the brothers' unique fusion ability.
Tayuya vs. Shikamaru Nara: Shikamaru's strategic mind is pushed to its limits as he tries to counter Tayuya's sound-based genjutsu.
Naruto Uzumaki vs. Sasuke Uchiha: The climax of the arc is the final confrontation between Naruto and Sasuke at the Valley of the End. This battle is a brutal and emotional showdown, with Naruto desperately trying to reach his friend, and Sasuke fully embracing his thirst for power.
The mission ultimately ends in failure, as Sasuke, after a devastating battle, defeats Naruto and continues on his path with Orochimaru. The genin team, though victorious in their individual fights against the Sound Four, is left severely injured and demoralized by their failure to retrieve Sasuke. This arc is a pivotal moment in the series, setting the stage for Naruto's unwavering resolve to become stronger and bring Sasuke back, a promise that drives the rest of the original series and much of Naruto Shippuden. The arc also highlights the deep bonds of friendship and the sacrifices made for one's comrades.
