Wikitext is generally an archaic method of formatting text anyway, most places are using Markdown (either the original implementation, or very often custom designed versions). From experience here, topics about wikitext or templates are really very rare, and if you wanted a channel on that, you could just make a technical-stuff chat where you talk about that kind of stuff.

re Discord, that's simply not true. Discord saves chat history forever (assuming people don't delete their messages) and it can be referenced without issue, either via searching for the post or making note of message links and sharing them to people, which will take them to the relevant chat.

If making a record of stuff was needed, you can just make a channel in a discord server with "consensus-records" and link to the relevant message that started the discussion, or a more simpler/automated solution would be using a bot which had a command to "close" a discussion: invoking this would clean out the chat and archive it to a text file that is then uploaded to a channel (or a website with a link given) that acts as a record of the said discussion.

A discord server is pretty popular with a lot of communities and they're significantly easier to moderate and use than even existing forums imo. I probably wouldn't be welcome in such a discord server though, given my history, but just clearing up misconceptions about the platform as someone who has used it for a few years now.

@Squinty97: old forums were really just wiki pages in a different namespace with set templates made for navigation. Nothing fancy about them at all and not likely to be very useful in consensus discussions (although given the wiki has so few active editors anyway, it's probably not that much of a concern as it used to be back in the day)

That fan feed is absolutely ugly (I checked a page after seeing this thread). If someone can provide the CSS to bury that forever, please do, because it's just awful.

The "n" thing isn't going into a second line for me, but I'm using Custom CSS so that the look of the pages is more consistent with older versions of Wikia (because I don't like the new style and never will).

Looking on that article linked earlier, I don't like that the Kanji/Romaji bar is above the image. This is especially the case, given that the text is so large compared to before (which makes it hard to read because there's too much large text too close to each other). I feel the infobox could be ever so slightly wider, but with smaller label text so it doesn't look so bad, imo.

It feels out of place as if it was just shoved there due to having no other place to be put. Can that bar be moved below the image, so it goes like:

I'm not against change, but this just seems like a change for the sake of making a change for no real purpose, like how does the wiki benefit by not having all of the lyrics present on the page?

The lyrics aren't really harming the wiki, so just making a change (ie removing them) doesn't seem like it's a good use of anyone's time. I maintain the lyrics in all formats are useful and shouldn't be removed.

The way I understand it is that a wiki can only highlight (well, announce) one thing at a time and I'm not even sure if forum threads can be "announced" in this way. It would mean that something would require a change:
- The only use of announcements is for episode threads.
- The wiki decides to stop using announcements for episode threads.
- Some other thing that makes it possible to have announcements for episode threads, but announcing other stuff at the same time

For clarity, I also saw that discussion, but it doesn't change my opinion on the matter. All the lyrics on the pages should be left as none of the content on there isn't doing any real harm to the wiki and it feels like a change just for changes sake

Uhm, I don't see how it's "unanimously decided" based on two users posting in the thread. There are many other editors here who might have an opinion on this.

I think the lyrics information is incredibly useful and they should remain on the page, thus I would oppose that information being removed, given that such information is almost certainly not going to be found elsewhere. In addition, it's doing no real harm to the wiki as a whole: if it was an issue, I'm surprised it wasn't raised several years ago, instead of when the wiki is largely less active than it was back in the day.

The lyrics info on here helped me significantly in finding the original tracks on YouTube/Spotify and allows me to relate to the song in its English translated version, given the dub does not translate the song vocals at all.

UltimateSupreme, plus Dantman, are the two main editors of this wiki who know how to use the SMW templates and have the most knowledge with using them. He responds when he can, he shouldn't just be sidelined because he doesn't edit as much. Post on his talkpage (as well as Dantman's) and they'll step into the discussion when they're able to.

Our wiki has always been technically orientated with the information displays. It should not be a goal of this change to make it easier for people to add false or unverified information to wiki articles and infoboxes.

It's not illegal to discuss it here, but this forum section is not the place to discuss the merits of making article changes (unless it is a sweeping change that can affect many articles at once, but such discussions go in Consensus Track). The forums really just exist for fans to discuss the series, separate from the wiki element, which presents information to the userbase.

Seelentau is correct: to discuss an actual change to an article, you need to use the article's talkpage. If the change in question is targeting multiple pages, go to the Consensus Track board.

I have no issue viewing the infoboxes on mobile, and the current infoboxes are fine tbh. I don't see the reason to change them, and while there might be millions of page views on the wiki, the series as a whole is winding down (with only Boruto to keep it going). We don't see that many edits here so I don't think there's much reason to go around changing the entire wiki's infoboxes, since little gets edited.

Looking at one of the example infoboxes via diffs on one of the articles, the new infoboxes extend down much further than our current ones (for clarity, I checked it on Hate Among the Uchihas: The Last of the Clan!). The current infobox stops just at the end of the "Trivia" section, but the new one leaves a large white space for no reason after Trivia, presumably because of the arbitrarily decided "width" based on supposed "research", which leaves little space for things to fit in a single line.

If this was being proposed, say 5 years ago when the series was still going strong and the wiki getting daily editors, I would agree with the change, but right now, with the wiki mostly dead and most activity in the forums, I don't think updating infoboxes really has any benefit to the wiki as a whole: it only really benefits Wikia/Fandom in the end.

Going through the updated list in the OP, I've listed all the words that are not translated in the English Dub, so they can be considered under the first and last bullet points in the "terms" heading on Snapper's sandbox page:

Notes: (these are given in order as they're used above)

• This is an odd instance of a term that should really be translated, but is better the way it is. In the dub, they are never referred to by this, however various conversations and statements from characters make it very obvious that these Shuriken are from the Fuma clan (ie Jiraiya saying something to the effect of "That shuriken, you're from the Fuma clan aren't you?"). Thus, for the sake of not having to change a bunch of things, this should be left as is.

• As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the usage of this particular group of ninja in the single arc they appear in is random, presumably based on lip movements. Evil Three Ninja, Janin and just the generic "Rogue Ninja" are all used to refer to them. Given that Janin is used at least once by the dub VA, this should not be translated on the basis of "things that are not translated by anyone".

• This is a strange one. In the subtitles of the episode where this is used, it is written as Makibishi Spikes. In the spoken word, however, it is just "Spikes". Since the subtitles pretty much specify this, this should be left as is.

• In the dub, Shikkotsu Forest is referred as Shikkotsu Woods. Woods is effectively just another name for Forest and thus makes no sense to translate.

Not sure if it can. In the dub, characters randomly interchange between saying "Evil Three Ninja", "Evil Ninja" and even just saying "Janin" around the point when Jiga gets introduced in the arc. So various names for basically the same thing are used which is confusing.

It's also spoken that way directly by the voice actors, so even if it could be translated, changing the name would be confusing to viewers for no beneficial reason.

For me, I agree with Elveonora in that we should largely translate pages that should be translated to match what the English dub would read it as, or what would be commonly understood by the general user base that would read the wiki (sub or dub). Those pages which are written under Japanese but are non-translated (So things like Akatsuki, Ama no Hoko, Jinchuriki, Summoning Rashomon and Tenchi Bridge) should not be changed because these things are not translated in the English dub (ie, in both sub and dub, they are referred in the same way, thus translating them will only confuse everyone).

There is one notable exception, in the form of Daimyo. For most of the series, they are referred to as "Feudal Lords", but in one single episode during the original anime, the word "Daimyo" is used. Given that said usage was in the 80+ episode fillers, I don't think it would be a problem to translate this to "Feudal Lord" since they are referred that way all the time, although in the Japanese VA, the word "Daimyo" is always used.

There are various other instances of "Japanese" words being used once throughout the anime (eg the Seven Ninja Swordsmen tools), before always being referred to by their English TV translation, or words randomly being used in the non-translated form (eg Janin) in their associated arc.

When it comes to all those Rinnegan techniques used by Nagato/Paths of Pain, the articles are named using those names spoken by the Japanese VA's, but in English, they are directly translated (eg Almighty Push, Planetary Devastation etc). I would say those should be left on the basis that they are better written in the Japanese and are how they are spoken by the Japanese VA's (also because that is their Romaji translation afaik).

"Translations" (either romaji or English TV) should only be used where it is needed or where the "mythological" naming does not make sense (ie like in Tenpenchii's case, where it is just "Cataclysm" in the dub). Otherwise, things should be left generally as they are, since a lot of these articles are very established names in the wiki as a whole.

To use Elve's example, the Yin/Yang stuff is extremely strange because early on in the series, Yamato specifically refers to Yin and Yang chakra natures untranslated, but the first instance of them being translated to "Shadow and Light Styles" is not until very far into the series (when Konan gets killed by the fake Madara). I don't even recall if, after that point, they continue to be referred in this way, or by the older "Yin and Yang" naming convention. For the topic it is covering, Yin and Yang should be left that way because everyone understands that concept.

Tl;dr Unless there is a case for changing the names of many of the articles listed by Snapper, they should just be left as they are, on the basis of "these are the common names referred to the techniques/person/location" or "this is how they are spoken by Japanese VA's or English VA's".
