Part of that stems from the fact that he wasn’t initially wirtten to be an unsung hero, but rather was meant to be exactly what the world perceived him as: a lunatic who let his power go to his head. He was also supposed to be the one who murdered Shisui, not Danzo (who didn’t exist yet).

@JustOneOfEm Idk about all that. To me, Itachi and Neji are actually surpirsingly similar as characters in how they approach familial relationships (setting aside the killing ofc); if you think about it, they both put on the act of a tough, jaded warrior, but both of them have the capability to be very warm and personable once you dig down and find the caring, vigilant big brother deep within. Tbh, you could (loosely) argue that Itachi actually fits that mold better.

Think of it this way: Itachi killed his clan to prevent a domino effect that would almost inevitably lead to full on world war while refusing to kill his little brother who had played no part in the situation as of yet, but Neji almost killed his little sister because he felt cheated. I’m not saying that to knock Neji as a character (whom I’m still very fond of) or defend the circumstances that made him the way he was (which were obv inane), but his spite was poorly directed in that he was targeting the product of the badly designed system (Hinata), not the source (Hiashi and all the others that propagated the system).

Even so, this would be the reformed Neji, meaning he would no longer have that problem and would never dare to be a nuisance to anyone in his family, especially not his niece and nephew. Still, I don’t think it’s fair to assume Itachi would be cold and distant/flat out bad as an uncle because of his record of hostility toward other members of his family when you could easily apply the same logic to Neji (clearly not as extreme, but not for any better reasons either and in fact more personal and spiteful reasons).

All that said, I still don’t think it makes a lot of sense to vote Itachi in this poll even now when you consider all the mental gymnastics you have to do to justify that as an answer. In that vain, I hope we can agree to (half) disagree.

@JustOneOfEm Idk, man; there are evidently arguments to be made in Itachi’s favor, but I agree that Neji should’ve been the winner just through a simple application of Occam’s Razor, if nothing else. That’s coming from a guy who loves Itachi and has him way higher in his personal character ranking than Neji, too (no. 2 vs. not no. 2, if you know what I mean).

@Sonofseagods I didn’t even think about the edo tensei thing, and I’m also pretty sure Itachi was old enough news and that Naruto and Kakashi both commanded enough respect from the Leaf so that either one of them could’ve dispelled enough doubt about Itachi’s character among the citizenry so that his presence wouldn’t affect Sarada that negatively (i.e. the positives would well outweigh the negatives).

Ofc, the genius behind Boruto’s name also just makes poor Sarada’s lackluster name (which was derived by a similar scheme of Japanization of an English word) even more underwhelming by comparison. Imagine naming your daughter for the bed of lettuce you eat for lunch. Naruto and Hinata had a daughter, too. Himawari means sunflower. That’s both adorable and beautiful. Wtf were Sasuke and Sakura smoking bro lmao

It doesn’t really matter whether or not he had a choice now. It’s not about his temperament as much as it is the perception the village has of him, which he can only do so much to amend. Even so, it’s a good point you bring up that Sasuke also had a dicey history with the village that didn’t end up hampering Sarada’s reputation by proxy (even tho it was potentially less morbid). That was supposed to be his reasoning for leaving to get the milk for 12 years, but I honestly don’t think it would’ve been that much worse for Sarada if he had just stayed. Rather, the benefit of him being around probably would’ve outweighed the costs. But anyway, should Itachi have still been alive and able to clear his name with the villagers enough to where his relationship with Sarada had the same nil effect on her relationship with the rest of the village as Sasuke’s, but Sasuke still took it upon himself to go on his milk run, Itachi could’ve potentially been a better uncle than Neji due to circumstances that wound up in his favor where he was able to take on the role of a sort of father figure to Sarada in Sasuke’s stead, which would give him an unusually active role as an uncle that Neji would be unable to replicate for Boruto or Himawara in that Naruto stuck around. Still, I can’t change my vote, so I’m siding with Nej.

If you were able to magically erase all of Itachi’s baggage, they’d be roughly equal. Since you can’t, it’s obv Neji.

One thing I will say is that I neglected to factor in Tobirama when I said that Minato was unrivaled among former and current Kage in tactical prowess. Also, it’s true that ftg is instantaneous and therefore no amount of skill in using it makes it faster (just like how it wouldn’t logically cost any more chakra to teleport across a room than it would across the planet), but I believe Minato is still more chakra efficient than Tobirama as far as ftg usage goes. Also, I don’t think there’s as much of a disparity between the two of them in reaction speeds as people say there is, but whatever. Anyone can think anything they want, really. I don’t necessarily feel compelled to expand this into a full-blown debate either way. If you want another point in Tobirama’s favor, he’s got better jutsu versatility (case in point: Tobirama mastered all five chakra natures vs. Minato’s three, which actually makes him the least proficient of all the Hokage in nature transformations).

I honestly figured somebody would bring up Yagura, which is justifiable. However, I would argue that Gengetsu has more versatility and is probably a better tactician as well. Also, Gengetsu would bring more to the group in that he’s got a lot of skill with genjutsu that most of the other possible candidates lack.

Maybe, but I was purposefully trying to avoid splits in membership and I personally believe that Minato is more powerful, but that’s just me. Everyone’s free to comment their own lists (and if some people could provide lists besides just current Boruto five Kage, that would be good).

I don’t watch Boruto, so I’m not including any of the new Kage from then. Also, I think Minato has better strategic feats, if I’m not mistaken. Besides, he’s at least as fast as Tobirama, and I’d venture to say he’s faster, as evidenced by the fact that he got to the scene of the Allied Shinobi Force vs. the Ten Tails before the rest and multiple statements that he’s better at using Flying Raijin than its creator (which is also evidenced in the exact same moment when he whisks the entire Ten Tails bijuu dama away).

What’s the most busted Kage team for drafting 1 from each village (no Hashi, Naruto, or DMS Kakashi)

I gotta go with…

Mizukage: 2nd, Gengetsu (obv choice, prolly the least contentious one)

Tsuchikage: 3rd, Ohnoki (young, as he seemed to still be able to keep up with Mummy Man Mu the 2nd even as an elder)

Raikage: 3rd, A (pretty contentious in that a lot of people wanna hype A #4, but A #3 is just everything that makes A #4 formidable kicked into high gear)

Kazekage: 5th, Gaara (adult cuz I’m still not convinced that Gaara is as powerful during the war arc as people claim he is, since he still didn’t seem to have fully surpassed his father, but there are also a lot of signs pointing to him being way above that level which make it really difficult and annoying to scale him)

And finally…

Hokage: 4th, Minato (since I said no Hashirama, Naruto or DMS Kakashi, I decided this would be the best option despite still not knowing exactly how I feel about Minato vs. Prime Hiruzen and that whole hairy debate that people will probably get mad about just from me bringing it up, but the main reason I settled on Minato for this particular context is the strategic edge he would offer that I don’t even think any of the other options could bring, let alone the final selections)

The four questions to ask are “Is this regarding how much it buffs the user?”, “Is it from base, or could it be from previous modes?”, “Are we basing this just on the characters who have been shown to use it, or anyone that could be re-contextualized with this power/Would those characters also have access to other buffs?” and “How do time limits factor in?”. Anyway, it seems like Bayron mode is prolly a bit too broken to be an option based on what I’ve heard, but idk. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m not exactly clamoring to provide my two cents, but maybe other people will find these inane questions helpful somehow.
