@Greatest Sin: I don't think a normal sword could go through BSM Naruto's body giving his durability feats in the Last. I dont think Toneri's sword was blunt. Let's say we dont know the full extent of Shin's ability.
Sasuke may have gotten a sword more powerful then Orochimaru's Kusanagi blade, yes let's go with that

but in 'the last' naruto was prepared for the attack, in this scenario he is caught by suprise, BSM never showed the ability to have a high durability at standard setting, it only boosts narutos strength, speed, chakra pool and senses ^_^
at least the sword is somewhat "ok", other things are more disturbing like the fact that naruto didnt train even after knowing that there is something more dangerous than kaguya :(
But Orochimaru's sword of Kusanagi couldn't pierce through version 2 state Naruto, shouldn't BSM be more durable?
Well at first encounter with Shin Kurama said to Naruto something like "are you going to fight again after all this time" and later said he's pathetic ... maybe Kishi wanted to show us that they re not stronger than they were in The Last like we expected since they didn't train at all, he had to nerf them to make path for next generation to show their development, that's my guess ..

it was mostlikely because naruto was caughed on suprise, i dont remember any feats of any mode where naruto was able to withstand a attack while not having noticed it beforehand, not even in SPSM, that would mean that he focuses chakra at the points where he is attacked in order to get higher protection :) of course this is only a theory :D
Wasn't the sword already inside of the chakra cloak, anyway? Naruto had partially manifested Kurama around the area to protect everyone, and Sasuke was standing within that area when the sword flew out of his hand and into Naruto's gut.
And in The Last, when Naruto countered Toneri's Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion, he focused his entire chakra cloak into a shield in the palm of his left hand (then focused his entire cloak into his right hand to deliver the finishing blow).
At any rate, a strong point is made (by Shin, Kurama, and Naruto himself) that the lengthy period of peace has caused their skills to deteriorate. Without having to fight for their lives, even if they do continue to train, it's only natural that their technique would stagnate. In fact, being nearly immortal might even be a detriment, because it means that they can exert less effort to win fights against mere mortals. That's sort of the point of the chapter, and even its title: people evolve through fighting for their lives, and those who stop evolving will die.
I'm reminded of Blade of the Immortal, where Manji's immortality has caused him to become a sloppy fighter, and he often loses limbs or has vital organs damaged while fighting, simply because he can survive and catch the enemy off guard, then heal after the fight is done.
Honestly, based on Shin's scars and all the implanted sharingan, which presumably were transplanted from his "sons," I wouldn't be surprised if he's constantly been fighting his "sons" to the death, replacing his vital organs every time he's mortally wounded. It would be interesting, anyway.
