A secret taijutsu that is orally handed down only within the main house of the Hyūga clan.

Overview

Using the chakra control gained from Gentle Fist training, the user releases a huge amount of chakra from all their tenketsu in their body. It acts as a defensive manoeuvre to compensate for the Byakugan's blind spot. After releasing the chakra, the user spins rapidly, creating a rotating shield around themselves to protect against attacks, effectively blocking projectiles and repelling away anyone in close proximity. It also has the added effect of reflecting an opponent's chakra against them. The size and power of the technique is controlled by the user.

Drawbacks

This technique is only effective when rotating, since the chakra itself is not enough to stop a physical attack thus if they cannot spin, the user becomes vulnerable. The chakra rotation can be disrupted by chakra threads, which slows down the user, binding and tangling them in the webbing for example, and ultimately forcing them to stop.[4][5]

Trivia

  • "Kaiten" (回天, literally meaning: "revolving heaven") is a term used to refer to turning the tides or fighting back up from a weak position. When written as "回転" (kaiten), it means "revolving" or "spinning". This technique in a way, combines both words into one.
  • Neji Hyūga learned this technique via observation and sheer talent, as he was a branch family member and it wouldn't have been taught to him. In the anime, Hizashi Hyūga also demonstrated the use of this technique.[6]
  • Tenten described this technique as the most powerful and perfect defence, surpassing even Gaara's sand.[7]
  • In the anime, this technique can block opponents' attacks without spinning. In the manga, it was not able to, but it was able to divert projectiles slightly.
  • In the anime, it is revealed that this technique can reach the speed of up to about 1200 km/h (745.6 mph), and if any opponent can outrun this speed in the direction of the rotation, it will breach the defence.[8]
  • In the anime, it is shown that this technique requires constant focus and precise control of one's chakra to execute the move properly. If not, the user will repel themselves out of the technique upon forming it.[9]
  • The Genjutsu World version of Hinata Hyūga is able to use this technique.[10]
