  • I know that generally speaking, chakra is the combination of physical and spiritual energies, but I never really understood what that meant practically. For example, is Yin-chakra spiritual and Yang physical? And if so, if someone says he has Yin or Yang nature, what does that mean? What does nature transformation and shape manipulation have to do with these properties? Basically, I'm confused as to the place of Yin and Yang in all of this, as well as what makes up a jutsu.

Edit: additionally, how does one release Yin or Yang, and what affect does it have on jutsu when added to them.

    • Good question. Before others answer, I'm gonna let you know that a wise man told me that chakra is screwy, so it might not be so easy to explain.

    • As you said, chakra is the result of combining your spiritual and your physical energies. Despite being usually made up of 50:50, chakra can also have a different ratio of both energies. Chakra that's made up of mostly spiritual energy is Yin chakra, while Yang chakra is made up of mostly physical energy.
It is unknown if you can add nature manipulation to these chakras, since they're usually used in their raw form, but form manipulation is definitely possible. As it is with Fire Release, for example, the release of Yin and Yang chakra is called Yin Release and Yang Release.

Or so the theory goes. However, Hagoromo and his Yin and Yang powers along with Yinyang Release complicated everything and the explanation in the fourth databook doesn't suffice, either.

    • First, you need spiritual and physical energies. I dont know if Hagoromo tranferred these energies or the ability to combine them into chakra. When you have them, you can combine them into the chakra. Then, you can transform it into a nature such as Fire, Water Release chakra etc. If you use this chakra without natural transformation it should be Yin or Yang Release chakra which based on the ratio of spiritual and physical energy. More physical is Yang and more spiritual is Yin Release. I think, Kishi added Yin and Yang Release to characters and techniques because of that, every technique should be a "X Release". Finally, you releasing your moulded chakra from your body and it is a jutsu. (Except taijutsu)

    • I'd say the most confusing thing about Yin and Yang chakra is the fact that Minato somehow split Kurama's chakra into separate Yin and Yang halves. Yet there's no indication that its Yin half or Yang half have pure Yin/Yang chakra. Who knows if pure Yin/Yang is even possible, since even the chakra used in Tayuya's technique was said to be mostly spiritual energy, not entirely. According to databook 4's explanation, simply creating chakra is based in Yin-Yang Release so logically all chakra should contain some amount of both spiritual and physical energy, thus both Yin and Yang.

Also, not every technique falls under Yin or Yang, otherwise every character would have at least one of those in their databook nature chart, but a few have neither.

    • So if chakra is the combination of Yin and Yang, does that mean your chakra stores reduce as you get older because your Yang chakra reduces, even if your Yin increases, since the 1:1 chakra combination won't be possible anymore (leaving an excess of Yin)? And does that mean as you get older and older, your genjutsu ability increases?

    • Like I said before, the concepts of physical energy and spiritual energy are unknown. They can be transferred from Hagoromo and named for representation.

Physical energy decreasing with age makes a lot of sense. We know that increasing either physical or spiritual energy increases your overall stamina/chakra from the fact that Hashirama's cells were specifically said to increase physical energy (by Obito I believe). So it makes sense that the same energy decreasing would drastically lower one's chakra reserves. This could also explain why clans like the Senju and Uzumaki have a large amount of chakra, having inherited Asura's life force and physical energy genetic traits.

On a side note, is "chakra reserves" an actual term from the series or just a fan term? The chakra article says one's total chakra is their "chakra power level" but I'm certain terms other than that have been used to describe it before.

    • Chakra isn't a combination of Yin and Yang. There's a difference in combining the energies to create chakra and combining Yin and Yang chakra to create Yinyang Release. Only those who were "touched by Hagoromo's power" can use the latter.

And those who can use the Truth-Seeking Balls.

    • In other words: the notion that chakra is either yin release, yang release or both at any given time is wrong, otherwise everyone would be both yin and yang release user.

Using Yin-Yang Release is definitely different from simply forming chakra (which is said to be based on Yin-Yang Release), but the databook has a caption stating "spiritual and physical energy. That is Yin and Yang." Or something to that extent. I guess we'll likely never know how it all works for sure.

No. The notion that normal Chakra is always Yinyang Release is wrong.

@BeyondRed: The databook only makes it more confusing, because it speaks of traces of Yin and Yang in the techniques the Nara and others use, not of Yin and Yang themselves. So yeah, it's all very confusing. But that's nothing unusual in Naruto, is it?

So it's like Magnets? You cut one in half and it just develops its own North and South Pole again?

Anyway, I did actually theorise on this somewhat and made a shot at it, you can find my theory here.

    • I assume yin and yang are spiritual and physical energies respectively, so it comes down to "everyone has yin and yang because basically everyone has chakra (spiritual and physical energies)". But there is one problem and that is, not everyone has Yin and Yang nature release and other natures in the databook. I assume everyone has yin and yang but not the ability to release it so that is why I assume they lack those nature release, if they are touched by Hagoromo they unlock the ability to use yin-yang release. I have a theory that chakra is yin and yang (ratio can vary) and when it mixes with one of the elemental natures in the body it becomes fire release, water release etc. for e.g.: Rasengan a pure chakra (which I belive is yin and yang chakra) when mixed with wind element becomes Wind release: Rasengan. When Madara explained about Ninjutsu we can see yin and yang symbol and some humans expelling fire, water so I think yin and yang have some contribution in elemental nature release. I think Kishimoto took this idea of five elements from religion probably Buddhism and Hinduism or some Japanese Philosophy-Wikipedia:Five elements (Japanese philosophy), people believed that body is made up of 5 elements. I believe everyone has 5 elements + yin-yang life force in narutoverse but not everyone has the ability to mix elements with chakra to release fire release water release etc. or release pure yin, pure yang for their advantage only few have those ability like Nara clan and Akimichi clan. Tayuya probably has the ability to release pure yin or containing more of yin and less of yang. Genjutsu falls under yin release so it has more of yin released from the eyes or whatever.

    • Yin is the spiritual energy and yang is he physical energy. Most of the time when these energies are combined they cancel out each other's special properties and become regular chakra. Some ninja have trained on how to use these energies individually, aka genjutsu users being users of yin release and akamichi using yang release to burn their calories into size enhancing chakra. And even fewer amount have learned to combine these energies while still keeping their unique properties, aka Yin-yang release. Most of time(99.9%) when these are merged they lose their special attributes which results in regular chakra, other factors like genetics may change the chakra or its malleability towards certain chakra transformations, aka nature transformation based kkg or uchiha being affiliated with fire release. It seems the ability to merge both into yin-yang release was in some way's Kaguya's elemental kkg that passed down to her son's but due to how Hagoromo changed the chakra structure of his sons + the blood line thinning, the ability to merge the two without them canceling each other was lost. Only by the sage granting some form his power himself to another or going through the arduous task of becoming the Ten Tails jinchuriki can one gain such a ability. In theory, yin-yang release is the hardest nature transformation to obtain.

So in short, focus training on spiritual energy = Yin Release focus training on physical energy = Yang Release Mastery of both + some form of the sage's(or just his generation's otusuki) power = Yin-Yang release.

    • I think Yin and Yang are a lot simpler than we make it out to be. Lets start with the difference between Yin/Yang Chakras and Spiritual/Physical Enegies.

Spiritual is energy of the mind. It is by extension Yin because Yin Chakra doesn't exist without it. So all Yin is Spiritual but Spiritual isn't necessarily Yin
Physical is energy of the mind. It is by extension Yang because Yang Chakra doesn't exist without it. So all Yang is Physical but Pysical isn't necessarily Yang.

Yin in its purest form, is Genjutsu. I think Nara's shadow techniques, though Yin, need a tiny bit of Yang to make the shadows have a physical presence.

Yang manipulates the physical, like Multisize and Calorie Control(?). these techniques maybe need a tiny bit of Yin on order "guide/control" the transformations. For example, Multisize would just stretch you until you exploded and became a bloody stain. In it's purest form I think it is vitalization, in oneself or others.

So let's switch somethings around. If Multisize was Yin Release then would have the ability to turn body parts into tentacles or other materials.
If the Nara's Shadows were Yang release it would turn the shadow into a physical object that would need shape transformation to not just be a super thin black silhouette on the ground.

Yin-Yang is using both at the same time. It creates something real and physical from nothing at all. Its the same Concept as Izanagi, but better. The wiki has it listed as a Yin and Yang but not Yin-Yang , so I am assuming it creates the illusion, then makes it real, while true Yin-Yang just makes things on the spot.

      Chakra. It is screwy.

      • Chakra is the thing which allows you to spit snakes and frogs.
      • Chakra is the thing which allows you to walk on water.
      • Chakra is the thing which allows you to change your gender.
      • Chakra is the thing which allows you to become invisible.
      • Chakra is the thing which allows you to ask this question so many times without a definitive answer. In short: chakra is anything the author wants it to be and something we will forever wonder about.

By this logic, all shounen anime Wiki's are pointless and should be removed.
