Well the combinations aren't as literal as you say, it's more like a compound having new traits rather than a mixture, but I think I can at least try to explain this bit.

Dust release, also called particle style is called that cause the Japanese translates to basically mean tiny pieces. In this case, heat causes things to break down (Like burning, or in a more disturbing example, how heat can help bodies to rot), wind can also cause this (millions of years of erosion from wind and rain turning rocks into dirt or cliffs into sand) and earth can also do this (sand blasting, abrasive polishing etc.) Basically put, the entire point of Dust release isn't to manipulate dust, it's to turn people into dust, and the elements involved are all used to do just that.
