  • Discussing strength of characters in Naruto leads to various avenues of thought, including: jutsu, stats, character statements, age, kekkei genkai, recognition, feats, experience etc. But what could be the best system for categorizing?

It goes without saying that certain characters were always meant to be vastly stronger than others, i.e. Hashirama and Madara. While others were meant to have a more "supportive" role, i.e. Ino and Tenten. Even characters who were thought to be lower tier had the potential and the opportunity to obtain a lot of strength, i.e. Kabuto.

Does a character who invents a jutsu become strong by default? Is a character who loses a fight but survives to fight another day not considered strong? What can be said about kage-level?

I invite users to discuss what makes characters strong, and whether it can be quantified and compared and how. You may even add what makes your favorite character strong.

I think that depends on how you want to analyze the manga

I prefer going by skills more than portrail

I think it's better, portrail can lead to confusion beacause people are kin to intepret things differently, and in the end becomes a discussion of "which one is supposed to be more cool"

With skills you get to think what combo and what counter one could do, I find it more fun, portrail can still come in handy though, like when you need to give someone a jutsu that they have never used, for example we could give Jiraiya a doton wall, beacause even if he never used it, his portrail suggest that he should be able to make one

      1. Usually yes

      2. Depends fights can have conditions, and they can lead one of the two to a disadvantage so even running away can be a feat, I mean the sannin got their title just by surviving

      3. Same as the others, usually it's difficoult to rank tronger characters, beacause you could always find below them some counters

There are two ways to be strong, one is to have a really broken special jutsu the other is to be a "complete" ninja like Hiruzen in his prime or Hashirama

My favourite ninja (for the skillset, not for his story) is Minato, I like a lot how he utilizes FTG, and I think it's a powerful jutsu that has a lot of creative applications

Thanks for the input. I always thought there is a certain measure of strength associated with surviving the first encounter with an enemy, known or more so unknown. Particularly, characters that invent a whole family of jutsu I find have a unique way of obtaining strength and further building on it.

Would you consider having a Kekkei Genkai and expanding on it comparable to inventing a new technique from scratch?

    • Well depending on the jutsu you want to create I guess it depends, but I think that iventing new jutsu is at least supposed to be more diffocult, this beacause kekkei genkai seems to be a natural ability of the one who posses them, something that thay already have "discovered", while creating a new jutsu requires one step more

    • I see. Well, it probably comes down to the potential, rate of progression and power obtain-ability for characters. That is of course excluding plot.

    • Yeah, really a lot of things can make a difference

By the way, I'd like to ask back what makes your favourite character strong, like what you use to to gauge his powers?

    • Well, I don't have a favorite character as such. Although, I do consider Minato, Itachi and Orochimaru some of my favorites. For:

Minato, I really do like how he was able to develop FTG and use a fighting style that revolved around speed and a lack of hand-signs. Without even mentioning his knowledge, intellect and reasoning in combat.

Itachi, I find his use of Genjutsu quite masterful and effective against most shinobi, even those who are physically stronger than him. And the fact that as a pacifist, he found a way around fights.

Orochimaru, he really embodies the word persistence. All of his jutsu aside, the strongest characteristic of his is the hyper self-preservation. Sure, he is reckless and egotistical, yet he knew that as long as he can live to fight another day, he will always win. As his strength can always be rebuilt and even increased with time. Which is why he had so many body modifications and jutsu that allowed him to survive in combat.

    • My vote Naruto, Hinata, Neji, and Itachi. Not because of their stories but because they trained non stop by taking hard work over being ignorant and taking the easy way out.

They all showed that they can change their fate and that hard work makes a difference. And because they faced tragedy in their life.
