This technique is a Lightning Release[2] version of the Rasengan, that was created by Boruto Uzumaki.

Usage

After creating a small Rasengan, Boruto subconsciously adds Lightning Release to it, before throwing it. As it glides, the nature transformation abruptly kicks in,[3] resulting in the technique disappearing from sight. This adds an element of surprise to the attack, as an opponent may lower their guard, assuming that the technique has dispersed, only to find themselves struck with by the invisible attack.

The size of Boruto's Vanishing Rasengan has seen a significant increase after the Mujina Bandits Arc, where it was shown to be around the size of a regular Rasengan.

Trivia

  • The specific nature transformation used for this technique was not mentioned in the film or its manga adaptaion, though it was stated to be a subconscious application of Wind Release in the Boruto: Naruto the Movie novelization. In the anime adaptation this was revised to Lightning Release, which was established as Boruto's innate chakra affinity.
  • In the novelisation of Boruto: Naruto the Movie, the Parent and Child Rasengan of Boruto and Naruto retained the vanishing effect of this technique.
  • In the anime, Naruto was able to throw a standard Rasengan, similar to the main function of this technique.[4]
  • In various media, when Boruto uses this technique, he calls it "Rasengan".
  • This technique was named by Sasuke Uchiha.
Orange Vanishing Rasengan

An orange-coloured Vanishing Rasengan.

  • In one instance, this technique was depicted as orange in colour, similarly to how the original Rasengan is sometimes depicted in the manga when used by Naruto.[5]
